Sidney ran, taking the steps two at a time up into the hall. He carried the rod in his right hand. It made a good weapon. There was no way he was leaving it behind. Ducking under the arch and back into the hall the heat of all those bodies hit him full on. Forcing himself to walk slowly to avoid unwanted attention he made his way across the back wall. It looked as if things were coming to an end. Many stood, arms raised, eyes closed, singing the last verse of the blessing hymn. Out of the hall he resisted the urge to run when two Greenwings appeared through a side door. He pushed down his rising panic. As was their tradition, they walked with heads bowed, demonstrating their disinterest in the physical world. Passing by one of the angels glanced up, making eye contact, before reaching over with supernatural speed and snatching the rod from Sidney’s hand. Hiding the rod in his robes the pair of angels carried on as if nothing was out of the ordinary.

Sidney watched them for a couple of beats before turning back to his escape. The great doors were open, and Sidney almost shouted out in relief. Throwing caution to the wind he ran, having no option left other than to go for it. There was no plan, other than to walk in and walk out again. He either got caught or he didn’t. He succeeded or he failed. There had been no thoughts of how to escape. Making it up on the fly he decided he would run to the bridge, dive into the water and take his chances with the lake.

Running through the gates he barely made it three paces before being stopped short by the ferocious heat thrown out by the bridge in flames. A line of angels, their wings stretched out against the dramatic backdrop of orange and blue flames barred any attempt to jump into the lake below. His mouth suddenly dry, his legs turned to jelly, crushed by failure he sank to his knees.
